Current Volunteer Opportunities
All volunteers are required to attend a general volunteer orientation. Our next orientation will be held in January 2009. We are recruiting only for the positions listed below. A personal interview will be scheduled if your interests and qualifications match these opportunities.
Volunteers are needed for BODY WORLDS 2 & The Brain—Our Three Pound Gem
Volunteers are needed weekdays, weekends, and some evenings in a number of capacities:
- Healthcare professionals and students enrolled in premed, human biology, dental school, massage school or allied health programs are needed to help reveal the wondrous functions of the human body to curious museum goers. Using an interactive cart you can help the puzzled public understand why their ears ring, limbs fall asleep, where the duodenum is located, and many other elusive anatomical and physiological mysteries. Scripts and conversation-starters will be made available to facilitate interaction between you and the inquisitive visitor. Training, scripts, and hands-on teaching materials will be provided. Shifts are 2 1/2 hours during exhibition hours and volunteers are asked to commit to 3 shifts per month for 2 months.
- Volunteer Ambassadors to assist visitors with the use of the audio tours; help protect the priceless bodies by being extra eyes and ears for the Museum; greet and direct groups; and direct visitors throughout the Museum. Shifts are 3 1/2 hours during exhibition hours and volunteers are asked to commit to 3 shifts per month for 3 months.
- Volunteers to assist with Family Days, lectures, and special events. Hours and shifts vary.
Three general training sessions will be held the week of February 23; daytime, weeknight, and weekend. Specific training for healthcare professional on the interactive carts will be held multiple times.
Background check is required of all volunteers working with the public.

Science Volunteers
Volunteers in our science department perform important tasks which maintain the Museum’s extensive collections. Opportunities include specimen preparation, collection inventory, and database entries. These are WEEKDAY only opportunities (unless otherwise indicated) with limited openings. The following departments are now recruiting:
The Herpetology Department is seeking volunteers to help with re-tagging 50,000 specimens. Multiple specimens (lizards, snakes, amphibians, turtles, and salamanders) are stored in a single jar. They need to be removed, re-tagged, and placed back in the jars. The herpetology lab is temperature controlled in the low 60s and all specimens are stored in ethanol, a strong smelling preservative. To apply complete the volunteer/intern application on this website. Volunteers should be available at least 4 hours per week on a weekly basis for 6 months. Students will be considered if able to make a minimum 3-month commitment.
9/8/08
The Botany Department is seeking volunteers to scan 17 volumes of field notes recorded by Reid Moran, lifelong explorer in Baja California and Curator of Botany from 1957–1982. The scanned pages will be indexed and added to a public website on plants of the Baja Peninsula. To apply complete the volunteer/intern application on this website.
Volunteers must be available during daytime hours; Monday–Thursday.

The Botany Department is seeking volunteers to prepare mounted plant specimens. This is delicate work requiring patience and dexterity. An interest in plants is helpful but not required. To apply complete the volunteer/intern application on this website.
Volunteers must be available 4 hours weekly; Monday–Thursday.

Animal Caretakers Needed
The Exhibits Department is seeking people who love lizards, snakes, and bugs to help us keep our live-exhibit animals healthy. Duties include feeding, watering, cleaning, keeping cages beautiful, and talking with our Museum visitors. Volunteers need to realize that taking care of live animals requires commitment and responsibility. Animals are housed in both public and nonpublic areas. Reliability is a must. We have Tuesday and Sunday openings. Volunteers must be available 2–3 hours per week for three months between the hours of 10 AM and 5 PM.
