Record-breaking numbers:
Membership and attendance reach all-time highs
June 2008—The San Diego Natural History Museum has experienced record- breaking attendance in this fiscal year with its most recent exhibitions: Dead Sea Scrolls and A Day in Pompeii. From July 1, 2007, with the opening of the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition, to the closing of A Day in Pompeii on June 15, attendance has exceeded 726,000. The Museum, now in its 134th year, has never recorded yearly attendance over 350,000.
Peacemaker Award March 2007—This month Provost and Director of the Biodiversity Research Center of the Californias (BRCC) Dr. Exequiel Ezcurra and Museum President and CEO Dr. Mick Hager will receive the international Peacemaker Award from the National Conflict Resolution Center (NCRC). This will be NCRCs 19th Peacemaker Award. The awards are given to outstanding leaders in collaborative problem solving and prevention.
Dr. Ezcurra and Dr. Hager are being recognized for creating a cross-border environmental preservation effort, effectively preserving one of the most important places in the world. Due in large part to the Museums efforts, the Sea of Cortés, including 244 islands and coastal areas, was designed as a United Nations World Heritage Site.
Dead Sea ScrollsTickets sold in over 19 states
March 2007—Tickets for Dead Sea Scrollsthe largest, most comprehensive exhibition of the Dead Sea Scrolls ever assembled, which opens on June 29, 2007have so far been sold in over 19 states. The Museum is receiving great interest for this exhibition and large crowds are expected this summer. The exhibition includes authentic scrolls, illuminated biblical manuscripts, ancient artifacts, landscape and aerial photography, and interactive displays about science, discovery, and exploration and a fully reconstructed, three-dimensional, real-time, interactive model of the site at Khirbet Qumran.
The Museum receives Web award from Surfing the Net with Kids
March 2007—Congratulations! "SDNHM: Finding Fossils" was reviewed in "Surfing the Net with Kids" newspaper column on March 14, 2007. "Surfing the Net with Kids" is syndicated nationally and appears in many papers across the U.S. including The San Diego Union-Tribune and The Boston Globe.
