Gallery Investigations

Self-guided Visits
Available all year
Conduct your own self-guided visit and enjoy the Museum's exhibitions and films in the giant-screen theater. Curriculum materials are available for most exhibitions. Teachers may arrange to preview exhibitions by calling 619.255.0210.

Days: Daily from 9:30 AM–4:30 PM
Fee: $4 per student
Group size: 10 students minimum; one adult per eight students is required and admitted at no charge. Additional adults $6 each.


Science Workshops

Autumn Harvest
Available October–January
What does it mean to hunt and gather? Step back in time! Grind acorns, pound yucca leaves for fibers, investigate hunting strategies, and find out if your students can match the ingenuity of California’s early Kumeyaay Indians.

Cetacean Sensation
Available February–March
Come discover the power of whale chatter, the beauty of blubber, and what’s on the menu for our marine cousins.

Amazing Arthropods
Available April–June
They are everywhere and they are many! Come learn about your neighbors: the insects, the arachnids, and a surprise backyard crustacean.

Days: Weekdays
Fee: $125 (includes General Admission to the Museum) for up to 20 students and four chaperones—additional students and chaperones $6 each
Times: 10 AM–11:30 AM and noon–1:30 PM. Some flexible scheduling available.
Group size: 20 students maximum per session

Flora and Fauna
Available October–June
Learn about plants and animals and how they get their jobs done by taking a close look at clues from the environment. Investigate seeds, nests, skulls and other Museum specimens, do a pollination play and discover small secrets of the life around us.

Fee: $195 for two 1.5-hour sessions, $80 for an additional session; same day, same room, same topic, limit three sessions per day

Museum on Wheels

Incredible Insects
Available October–May
This class emphasizes insects common in our area—our closest neighbors!
Docents will bring cased and touchable specimens to your classroom!

Fee: $155 per school visit for two one-hour sessions; same day, same room, same topic, limit three sessions per day

Snakes and Lizards of Southern California
Available September–June
In your classroom, our expert reptile handler will introduce kindergartners to live animals for an up-close experience with local and rescued reptile species.

Fee: $225 for a one-hour session; $325 for two one-hour sessions
Times: Flexible
Group size: 60 students maximum per session
